The deadline for entering the Liberal Party leadership race to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau closed last evening. Seven candidates, including two of Indian origin, are expected to compete for the position.
The contenders include former Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla, MP Chandra Arya from Ontario, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, ex-banker Mark Carney, Government House Leader Karina Gould, MP Jamie Batiste from Nova Scotia, and MP Frank Baylis from Quebec.
All candidates have confirmed submitting their nomination papers along with a refundable deposit of $50,000. This deposit forms part of the total entry fee of $350,000, which must be paid in four installments by February 17.
Voting for the Liberal Party leadership election is scheduled for March 9.
