Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly to Visit U.S. to Block Trump’s Tariffs

BY Connect Newsroom, Jan 27, 2025 7:40 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

She stated that, regarding border security with the U.S., Canada has a strong border plan in place, which is being implemented.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly will visit the U.S. on Wednesday in an attempt to block Trump’s tariffs. Joly confirmed this while speaking to reporters today.

She stated that, regarding border security with the U.S., Canada has a strong border plan in place, which is being implemented. Joly also mentioned that she will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington on Wednesday to discuss the tariffs and is in contact with the President's border czar, Tom Homan.

However, Joly also confirmed that Canada is prepared to respond to Trump's tariffs immediately, if necessary.

It is important to note that Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods starting February 1, which is fast approaching. Almost all provinces in Canada, except Alberta, support responding to the tariffs. However, estimates suggest that these tariffs could have an impact on employment.
