China Responds to Trump's Threat of Additional Tariffs

BY Connect Newsroom, Apr 8, 2025 5:27 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

The ministry described the U.S. threat to increase tariffs as a "mistake on top of another," urging that the U.S. should not attempt to blackmail China.

China strongly reacted on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 50 percent tariff on Beijing. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued a warning to the U.S., stating that China is prepared to "fight to the end" and will take equal countermeasures to protect its interests.

The ministry described the U.S. threat to increase tariffs as a "mistake on top of another," urging that the U.S. should not attempt to blackmail China. The statement further emphasized that China will never accept such actions, and if the U.S. continues down this path, China will respond accordingly.

This sharp response came after Trump posted on social media on Monday, threatening to impose the additional 50 percent tariff on China starting Wednesday unless Beijing withdraws its existing 34 percent tariff on U.S. goods.
