Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is holding a meeting with all opposition leaders on Parliament Hill to inform them about the government's plan for the Canada-US border.
Trudeau called the meeting after his recent discussions with former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, four days ago, aimed at addressing the tariff issue.
However, Canada has not yet received assurances that Trump will back down from imposing the tariffs. It is worth noting that the incoming US President has warned Canada and Mexico that if these countries fail to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking at the border, a 25 percent tariff will be imposed on their goods entering the US.
Trump had stated that he would give the green light to the imposition of tariffs in his first order upon taking office on January 20. If this happens, it will be a significant blow to Canada, as a large portion of the country’s exports go to the United States, and this move would affect jobs across the country.
